CoP15, 7th - 18th December 2009
In June 1992, many countries of the wold including Malawi came together at the UN
Rio Earth Summit to sign the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC). The UNFCCC sets out a legal
framework for tackling climate change caused by
man-made emissions of greenhouse gases. It has
a clear overarching goal of preventing dangerous
climate change in such a way as to ‘to allow
ecosystems to adapt naturally to climate change,
to ensure that food production is not threatened
and to enable economic development to proceed
in a sustainable manner’.
The convention deals both with mitigation and
adaptation issues and has been signed by 192
countries.
Annual Conference of Parties (CoPs) are held to discuss the implementation of the UNFCCC and new measures to combat climate change. The next CoP will be hald in Copenhagen from 7 to 18 December 2009. The Government of Malawi will also be attending this crucial meeting.
