Hendricks Phiri is a development economist specialising in socio-economic policy analysis and development. He has a Master of Arts in Development Economics and Bachelor of Social Science degree. He has several years of working experience in championing good governance through public policy analysis and advocacy particularly from the civil society window. He has since 2004 been involved in the implementation and management of donor funded projects.
After graduating from the University of Malawi with a Bachelors Degree in Social Science majoring in Economics in 1990, Hendricks Phiri joined the Reserve Bank of Malawi as a macro-economic analyst in the Research and Statistics Department where he rose to a supervisory position. His input helped the central bank in meeting its objective of achieving and maintaining price and financial stability as it contributes to economic growth and development. In addition to socio-economic analysis, his work also involved participating in high level monetary and fiscal policy consultations between the IMF and Malawi.
In June 1999, Hendricks Phiri obtained a Master of Arts in Development Economics degree from Williams College, Massachusetts, United States of America. The course involved a rigorous analysis of development concepts and issues including climate change. In 2004, Hendricks Phiri joined the EC Delegation to Malawi as a Project Manager/Macro-economist where he advised the European Union on socio-economic policy issues on Malawi through research and analytical reports. As a project manager, Hendricks Phiri was a member of the steering committee on one of EU funded Government of Malawi projects, where he facilitated the smooth, timely and effective implementation of the project.
In 2007, Hendricks Phiri joined CIDA-Malawi as a Project Manager for the Project on Economic Governance. The Project on Economic Governance focused on building the capacities of various stakeholders on public policy formulation, implementation and monitoring with more emphasis on the national budget. Among other areas, the project extensively worked with civil society groups with the aim of building their capacities in effective policy analysis and advocacy so that they collaborate with and provide appropriate input to both the Executive and Legislature arms of government with regard to the public expenditure decision making process.
