Legislative Representation in Environment and Natural Resources in Malawi
The overall goal of the project is to improve environmental decision-making
by making public policy and government actions more responsive to citizen
needs and community interests. More specifically, the project aims to
develop an understanding of the incentives and disincentives for
legislators to represent their electors, and will promote public policy and
actions to encourage them to better support the environmental needs of
their constituents.
By helping ensure that legislators meet their representation
responsibilities, the project seeks to strengthen an institutionalized form
of public participation. For this purpose an assessment of the state of MP
representation in environment have been carried out. Planned activities
involved capacity building to strengthen MP legislative environmental
representation and public awareness of the role the MP ought to play to
represent their environmental interests of consituents as well as
monitoring the performance of MPs in representing environmental interests
of their constituents.
