Participation in the UNFCCC CoP 15

The 15th UNFCCC Conference of Parties, CoP15 was held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 7th to 18th December 2009.The Malawi delegation which was led by the Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment comprised of government officials and the media, also included members of CISONECC which worked hand in hand with Malawi government in preparation for the talks. World leaders were to agreed on a post Kyoto agreement, as the protocol expires in 2012. Negotiators were to reach consesus on a number of issues before crafting a successor agreement which included the extent of carbon reduction by developed countries in specified time periods, financing for climate adaptation for developing countries, technology transfer and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.

The Worldwide Views on Global Warming Event

CISONECC worked together with the British Council and Dr David Mkwambisi of Bunda College of Agriculture to organise this conference in Malawi with a similar event taking place in 37 other countries worldwide on 26 September 2009. The event aimed at connecting a missing link in climate talks at the upcoming CoP15 negotiations which are citizens voices and gave them a chance to influence climate policy. Participants were citizens who had not been involved in climate change policy formulation but who nevertheless experience the effects of climate change. For the full report, click here.

Press Release: On Climate Change Funding Committment by European Union to Developing Countries

Following the announcement by the Europen Commission in September 2009 on its offer to contribute 15 billion Euros a year to assist developing countries to adapt to climate change, CISONECC responded by publishing a press release in The Nation and Daily Times Newspapers of September 17th. The press release which was addressed to the European Commission expressed CISONECC's concern that the amount committed was far much less than what is required and what the European Union is responsible for and feared that the committment could set a trend, with other developed nations following suit. The press release appealed to all developed countries preparing their contributions to climate funding to make sure that their committment are within estimated costs. CISONECC also called for a separate climate funding stream to developing countries in addition to current development aid committments. Click here to view the press release.

Engagement of the National UNFCCC Focal Point
CISONECC is coordinating civil society input into Government of Malawi positions towards the upcoming 15th Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC. The network devised a framework for climate change policy and advocacy campaign for Malawi civil society which ensures its timely intervention in all steps taken in the country's preparation for this conference to ensure that civil societies' concerns and demands are addressed during this important global policy event.

Quarterly Meetings
CISONECC members meet once every quarter to share information, exchange experiences and merge their voices on specific issues requiring policy positions.

CISONECC Constitution
CISONECC is currently working on a constitution which will govern the network.

Institutional Scoping for Stakeholders Working on Climate Change
The exercise aimed at mapping organisations and institutions involved in climate change. It assessed institutions and determined their specific intervention areas on climate change and disaster risk reduction. The study also aimed at facilitating harmonization of activities and improving networking amongst institutions doing similar work. It also identified challenges the institutions are facing and training needs of the organisations' personnel on climate change
. The study covered all members of the network. For the full scoping study report, click here.
